AUS 2016
The theme for AUS 2016 is, “Leadership in a Complex World: Smart Cities, Smart Citizens.”

According to the United Nations Population Fund, more than half of the global population live in towns and cities, and this number will continue to swell to about 5 billion by 2030. Asia is experiencing an unprecedented rate of urban growth, which lead to the support for the development of “Smart Cities” to tackle the emerging challenges associated with urbanization. It is crucial for the future leaders of tomorrow to have an informed understanding of what this entails and what it implies for the Asian region.

Smart Cities make extensive use of technologies to improve their citizens’ quality of life while sustaining growth. AUS 2016 also focused on issues regarding stakeholder management, accessibility of technology to citizens as well as citizens’ welfare, which are essential for effective utilization of technological developments to the benefit of citizens. Participants also looked beyond Smart Cities as mere technological fixes, and delve deeper into the dimension of citizen development and involvement in the creation of Smart Cities.

In AUS 2016, we were pleased to partner with 5 universities in the ASEAN region, providing participants the opportunity to explore the pertinent technological, institutional and social issues related to Smart Cities. These issues include the various challenges faced with managing the interests of multiple stakeholders in the creation of Smart Cities and with developing ‘Smart Citizens’ in an attempt to adopt a more participatory approach towards Smart Cities.

In the Singapore Leg of AUS 2016, participants attended the World Cities Summit 2016, co-organised by the Centre for Liveable Cities and the Urban Redevelopment Authority of Singapore, held from 10-14 July at the Marina Bay Sands Expo and Convention Centre. Partnering with Design Singapore, the Design Thinking Framework was imparted to participants as a means of guiding them towards accomplishing the deliverables of the Summit. Leveraging on Smart Cities as a focal point for discussion and idea generation, AUS 2016 instilled in our future leaders a better appreciation of the multidisciplinary approaches to managing complex problems in our region today and in the future.
